New 2017 Nissan GT-R at Reedman-Toll Nissan for Bethesda, MD

For 2017, the GT-R gets its most prolific update since 2007, styling both front and rear, adding 20-hp, a noticeably updated interior, and a new infotainment system. Nissan put inside more sound deadener (but you can still hear the engine as needed) and an acoustic glass windshield. Style changes for 2017 also encompass a variant of Nissan's "V-Motion" grille, functional vents next to quad exhaust tips, more pronounced style lines on the reinforced hood, side-sills pushed outward, and new 20-inch wheels. The GT-R is powerful, loud, and revered enough to be nicknamed "Godzilla" within the racing community!

Under the GT-R's Hood

The Premium trim sees a 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged 24-valve V6 that attains 565 horsepower (at 6,800 rpm) and torque arrives at 467 lb-ft at 3,300-5,800 rpm. The Nismo trim gets a tuned 600-hp, 3.8-liter, high-capacity twin-turbocharged V6 engine. Following the process exactly for how a race car's engine is made, Nissan really ups the ante with the 2017 GT-R. The engine is literally made in a sealed-from-debris chamber, by a lone master tech who puts a signed plaque on the engine when done. There is a dual-clutch 6-speed transmission with 3 driver-selectable modes. There is also an advanced Vehicle Dynamic Control: R-Mode (race), Normal, and Save. This feature allows ice and snow driving to occur much more reliably than normal sports cars do. Completely automatic shifting is available, or drivers can get full sequential manual control with steering column-mounted paddle shifters. There is a double wishbone front suspension with aluminum arms, a multi-link rear suspension with aluminum arms, and rigid front/rear suspension subframes, made with 6-point mountings to the car body. Few cars come close, honestly, to the GT-R's 0-60 mph times of less than 3 seconds, or its advanced all-wheel-drive handling. Special springs, a rigid body structure, and custom Bilstein DampTronic dampers help smooth out the drive with track-level handling. The unique rear-based independent transaxle and an AWD system significantly aid handling by directing torque to the appropriate wheels as needed.

Design of Nissan GT-R

The 2017 GT-R is now available in Premium level and has a limited availability for its Nismo trim, and there are 2 obtainable packages: The Premium Interior and the Cold Weather packages. The Nismo trim rocks an aerodynamic body design with a carbon-fiber front and rear fascia, a rear spoiler and side sills. Active noise cancellation aids to reduce extra road volume. A Display Command controller is added to the center console, and the GT-R has the NissanConnect system for navigation and connectivity to mobile apps, staying up with the times. An 8-inch touchscreen is inside, and the amount of knobs and switches has been reduced by almost two thirds since the prior year's model. The exterior absolutely had many aerodynamic changes happen, with wind being redirected not just out, but instead back into the engine for power and inside to cool rear brakes. LED lamps on the redesigned front illuminate the sides of the road more than most, which is great when turning at dusk or later. The side skirts redirect air better and the entire bottom of the car is now covered with a light composite paneling to keep air (and rise) out. A titanium exhaust with Exhaust Sound Control will regulate exhaust notes appropriately.

Does the Nismo model have any help on the tires for accelerating?

Yes! 20-inch forged-alloy wheels have knurled beads that assist in keeping the tires from slipping around the wheels during quick acceleration.
